How to take a Bubble Selfie!

There are soooo many things you can do with Giant Bubbles, and one of them is.. TAKE A SELFIE!!

Bubbles are naturally a perfect reflective surface, and given the right light, it's a wonderful way to see your world in silhouette on the film of a bubble.

It's a great fun activity, fab for a winter's day, and a great way to introduce the kids to nanometres (bubble films are between 5 and 500 nanometres thick!), light interference, reflections, colour and photography.  All whilst having loads of fun.  Here's a quick how to:

To take the perfect Bubble Selfie:

Wait for a calm and humid day - preferably soon after rain.

Make bubbles!  They will slowly drift down and will simply sit on a wet/damp pavement, or on the grass, or on any available damp surface.

Once the bubbles have settled, get up close and have a look at the beautiful reflections that you can see in the bubble!

As the fluid in the bubble film slowly is pulled down by gravity, and as the film itself thins through slow evaporation, you will notice swirling changing colours.

These colours will change as the thickness of the bubble film changes, but also this will affect what colour you will see!

The sequence in this post is all taken with ONE BUBBLE!

Depending on the angle of the light, mainly dependent on the time of day, you will get stronger or more faint silhouettes.   This will work best early in the morning or at sunset.

Once you can see yourself in the bubble - take a picture!! (or several :D )

Why not make a star shape, or wave, or take a video?  There are plenty of fun ideas that you and your friends can get up to with bubbles - so when you're out and about these next holidays - why not literally get yourself IN a bubble!

With love from all of us here at Dr Zigs!
