Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Dr Zigs.  It has underpinned our work from the very outset, when Paola started the company at her kitchen table.  Did you know that we were one of the first signatories to the landmark Wellbeing of Future Generations Act in Wales back in 2014?

We also believe that sustainability is a journey - it has no beginning or end, but is a continuous path of improvement. We are always striving to do better, and to share this journey with our customers.

Here are some of the ways we reducing our impact on the planet:

Bubble Mix

Our Bubble Mix is 99.25% plant-based, biodegradable, vegan, cruelty free and non-toxic.

Most surfactants worldwide are of petro-chemical origin.  After years of research we have sourced these from sustainable plant-based origin.  It's something we are very proud of. We still have a 0.75% of the mix we're working on to reach the target 100% plant.  We'll keep you posted..

Natural Materials

We use natural materials as much as we can, to reduce our plastic use. This includes FSC wood, cotton, coconut and bamboo. We even use cellophane bags derived from wood which are fully compostable, rather than plastic bags (but only where these are an essential requirement by outside companies).  Otherwise you will find us packaged in FSC cardboard.

Sustainably Sourced Materials

  • FSC-approved wood and paper products
  • Fairtrade, organic cotton
  • Our coconut buckets are sourced from a community farm in Southern Vietnam. They are completely hand-made from reclaimed coconuts, which would otherwise be burned as waste.

Circular Economy

We are trying to reach a circular economy with our products, using recycled materials, which can then be recycled once more. We use bottles made from a percentage of recycled plastic (we're working to get this to 100% recycled), and are now phasing in 100% recycled aluminium bottles.

Reuse and Recycle

Our cardboard packaging is FSC and fully recyclable. Additionally, our flatpack kit boxes encourage the buyer to use the box as a seedling tray for growing herbs. The drawing can also be coloured in, and re-purposed as a toy.

Optimised Packaging

Our packaging has been designed to be as compact and sustainable as possible. Our flat bottle design and flatpack kits reduce both packaging and shipping impact, with a 30% reduction in carbon.

Educational Toys in Nature

Our Frozen Bubble Kit and new Bubble Pollination Kit are designed to get kids outside and interested in learning about nature. We want to inspire stewardship of the natural environment through the use of these kits.

Plant-based Inks

We are moving into the use of plant-based inks for our packaging, labels and instruction booklets.

Ethics of Sustainability

At Dr Zigs we know that sustainability is all about people. We work to find ethical suppliers, and support humanitarian causes to spread our message as far as we can. We send donations to refugees and hospices, as we believe that everyone should have access to environmentally-friendly, sustainable toys, no matter their situation.
